A newly opened Security Operations Center at Houston Community College is preparing students for high-skilled jobs in cybersecurity, a field experiencing a critical shortage of workers.

Houston Community College (HCC) and Texas Southern University (TSU) have signed a memorandum of understanding that will help graduates from HCC’s Drafting and Design program transfer seamlessly into TSU’s College of Science, Engineering and Technology to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Technology.

Houston Community College has opened registration for inaugural courses designed to help businesses mitigate the impact of hurricanes, other catastrophic weather events and unexpected disasters, part of the college’s new Resiliency Center of Excellence.

Houston Community College System (HCC) Chancellor Cesar Maldonado, Ph.D., P.E., testified before the Texas House of Representatives in Austin last week that continued funding through the Texas Reskilling and Upskilling through Education (TRUE) Initiative is needed to address persistent workforce shortfalls in the state.

Houston Community College is one of nine national finalists to receive a grant of $100,000 from Indianapolis-based Lumina Foundation. Through The Million Dollar Community College Challenge, the foundation awarded $1.9 million in grants and technical assistance directly to community colleges, with one school receiving $1 million and nine others receiving $100,000 each.
