HCC Filmmaking Program partners with MediaU to enhance learning

Jun 7, 2023

The HCC Filmmaking program has partnered with MediaU, an online community that features virtual and live networking events and mentorship for students from working industry professionals.

“The idea is to provide cutting-edge, media industry-related content for students during their final year of study,” said Michael Cohn, HCC’s division chair of Media Arts, Audio Recording, Filmmaking and Music Business. “It is another plus in our already very robust program.”

He noted that MediaU also offers a variety of courses distilling current, high-level industry concepts into digestible lessons that can enhance marketable skills for students.

Filmmaking Professor Kate Phillips said her “students appreciate the opportunity to augment their education with real-world examples and hear from engaging speakers."

The HCC Filmmaking Program offers training for careers in media production by providing students with a solid foundation in six disciplines: filmmaking: screenwriting, producing, directing, cinematography, editing and audio/sound.

The hands-on program allows students to work with film cameras while learning to edit with non-linear digital and traditional equipment. Students perform every function necessary to complete theatrical, documentary and documentary films, including script writing, producing, directing, acting, shooting, budgeting, managing and serving as a crew member, Cohn noted.

Students can earn an Associate of Applied Science degree and Level 1 and 2 Certificates with specializations in screenwriting, editing, film/video production or as generalists in the specialty.

The filmmaking program is housed in the Art and Design in the Media, Visual and Performing Arts Center of Excellence at HCC’s Northwest College.
