Breaking Barriers from Malaysia to Houston

For many, education is a given path, but for some, it’s a battle to even step through the door. Coming from Malaysia, I faced a harsh reality when my passion for Information Technology (IT) seemed out of reach after struggling with my final year exam, which was equivalent to the Cambridge O-Levels. Despite the setback, I was grateful for the unwavering support of my family and loved ones. Although it was a challenging time, their encouragement helped me stay focused as I navigated this crossroads.

Navigating a New World
As an international student, adapting to life in the U.S. came with its challenges. While language wasn’t a significant barrier, the slang and colloquial expressions used in everyday conversations required adjustment. Understanding local nuances in communication became an unexpected yet crucial part of my learning experience.

Guidance that Made the Difference

HCC wasn’t just a college—it was a support system that empowered me to succeed. The professors played a pivotal role in my journey, offering not just instruction, but mentorship, industry insights and encouragement. Their guidance provided the expertise I needed to not only keep up, but thrive in an academic setting that was initially foreign to me.

From Student to Educator: Paying It Forward

After completing my studies at HCC, I transferred to the University of Houston, where I continued my pursuit of knowledge. My dedication paid off—I not only graduated but was also hired as an adjunct professor shortly after. That experience ignited a passion beyond just learning; I discovered a deep desire to teach and inspire others.

Recently, I earned my graduate degree and I'm now pursuing a PhD in Information Systems, focusing on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Cybersecurity. My journey from being rejected in Malaysia to becoming an educator in the U.S. is a testament to perseverance, the power of education and the opportunities that HCC made possible.

Shaping the Future of AI & Cybersecurity

Looking ahead, my goal is clear—I want to educate and empower the community about AI and Cybersecurity. These fields are shaping the future and I believe that knowledge in these areas shouldn’t be limited to a select few. By sharing my expertise, I hope to bridge gaps, inspire innovation and make technology more accessible to diverse communities.

My story proves that where you start doesn’t define where you end up. For any non-traditional or international students out there wondering if they can succeed, my message is simple: yes, you can. With the right support and determination, anything is possible.
