How HCC opened doors for Brittaney Wilmore to a career in Journalism

When Brittaney Wilmore reflects on her path to a career in broadcast journalism, she credits Houston City College (HCC) with giving her more than an education. It gave her confidence, community and a clear sense of direction.

A graduate of Cinco Ranch High School in Katy, Wilmore attended HCC––thanks to the David and Jean Wiley Scholarship through the HCC Foundation. She graduated in 2011 with an Associate of Arts in Communications.

The HCC scholarship not only covered the cost of tuition and books, but it also led her to the experience that would shape her career: interning at HCC-TV.  Under the guidance of faculty and professionals with newsroom experience, Wilmore learned how the television business works.

“HCC-TV has my heart,” she said. “Some of my fondest memories are in the basement at 3100 Main, learning Final Cut Pro, Premiere, producing shows, booking interviews and meeting lawmakers and community leaders. It was my favorite part of being a student at HCC.”

Breaking into the industry

After leaving HCC debt-free and completing her bachelor’s degree at the University of Houston, Wilmore began her professional career as a line producer for the morning show on KHOU11 News.

A few years later, Wilmore joined ABC13 as a digital content producer, managing online publishing and breaking news alerts. Today, she is getting used to her “fairly new role” as Director of Community Engagement at ABC13, a public-facing position that allows her to connect directly with the Houston community––coordinating outreach initiatives, public appearances and community-centered story telling.

When Wilmore encounters students trying to break into the industry, she always wants to pay it forward.

“I remember what it was like to send out resumes and cover letters, hoping for someone to notice my work,” she shared. “The same care and advice that was shown to me is what I try to give back.”

And speaking of giving back, Wilmore has a simple and heartfelt message to all the donors who give generously to the HCC Foundation.

“You will not regret pouring into a student. Your money will go far, and it will be one of the best investments you make.”

Her advice to current students?

“Stay in touch with mentors. Be willing to take on new projects and learn new tools. Don’t be afraid to say ‘yes.’ That has served me well everywhere I’ve been.”
