HCC S.O.A.R. program aims to accelerate local business growth

This summer, Houston City College is launching S.O.A.R., a new 10‑week, AI‑powered accelerator designed to help early‑stage businesses grow faster, operate smarter, and compete in a rapidly changing marketplace.

The program—hosted at the HCC Central Campus Center for Entrepreneurship—is set to start next month. It is seeking participants from across Houston, Pearland and surrounding communities.

S.O.A.R. combines structured business education with hands‑on mentorship and real‑time application. Participants will sharpen their strategies in areas like sales, marketing and growth, while learning how to use emerging AI tools to streamline operations and make better decisions.

“Participants will be able to connect with experienced entrepreneurs, industry professionals, and a broader business network—relationships that can prove just as valuable as the curriculum itself,” said April Felton, director of the Center for Entrepreneurship at HCC Central.

Accelerator programs like S.O.A.R. have been shown to improve a startup’s chances of securing funding and achieving long‑term success, making them an important driver of local economic growth. By strengthening small businesses, the program aims to support economic mobility and prosperity across communities.

Participants must have a legally formed, for‑profit business and a fully developed business plan, along with a willingness to commit time and explore innovative technologies. The program requires roughly 30 days of engagement during the 10‑week period, Felton noted.

The classes will conclude with a business showcase, where participants present their ventures to college leaders, community partners and supporters.
