HCC Astra STEM Project

Minority Science and Engineering Improvement Program - (MSEIP)

As an allusion or reference to Houston’s official nickname, “Space City,” and to connote a feminine interpretation on the study of astronomy, the term Astra represents the women who will benefit from the Minority Science and Engineering Improvement Program’s HCC Astra STEM Project. The goal of the program is to increase the flow of underrepresented minorities particularly minority women achieving a baccalaureate degree in science, technology, engineering or a math related field otherwise known as STEM, and to increase the number of women entering scientific and technological careers.

Although this program emphasizes minority female participation, no minority applicant is denied participation based on gender.

To ensure the success of the HCC Astra STEM Project, the Houston Community College system collaborates with the Houston Independent School District and Rice University to improve access to higher education and employment in STEM careers for all underrepresented groups.

This program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education.
