HCC Coleman College for Health Sciences Medical Laboratory Technician Program
Mar 28, 2014
A Medical Laboratory Technician solves medical problems and provides answers to critical questions concerning patient health by performing laboratory tests on patient body fluids. These results influence the diagnosis and treatment of a patient by the physician. From laboratory test results, clues to the absence, presence, extent and cause of disease may be found. Tests performed are in all general laboratory areas such as Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Immunology, Immunohematology (Blood Bank), Coagulation, Parasitology, Mycology and Urinalysis.
HCC Coleman College for Health Sciences located at 1900 Pressler, Houston Tx. 77030, in the Texas Medical Center is offering an Associate of Applied Science degree for the Medical Laboratory Technician Program. Because classes are small, the student receives more individual training making the MLT Program student-friendly. The degree may be completed by a full time student in two years or three years by the part time student. After graduation, there is a national certification exam. The HCC Medical Laboratory Technician program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences located at 5600 N. River Rd., ste. 720, Rosemont, IL 60018; phone number is 773 741 8880.
Today's Medical Laboratory Technician is employed in many diverse medical settings ranging from hospital laboratory, reference laboratory, research laboratory, forensic laboratory, regional blood banks, small clinic laboratories, veterinary clinics, physicians' office laboratories and other laboratory settings. More employment opportunities include working in medical businesses such as medical instrument technician or medical supply industries.
Prospective health science students must go to Coleman Connection at http://colemanconnection.org and view and complete the online orientation. At the end of this online presentation, students will create an account and register for a program information session held at the HCC Coleman College campus. The Medical Lab Technician Program Session will be held on the first Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in room 368 (note room number may change).
Texas Medical Center parking is available across the street from the Coleman College for Health Sciences and the parking fee is $6.00 - $12.00.
The Medical Lab Technician Program Session will provide information and admission requirements for an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science (A.A.S.) as a Medical Laboratory Technician. During the information Session, requirements for the Histologic Laboratory Technician will also be discussed. Job demand for both professions is high in the Houston area and throughout the nation.
Prospective students should bring their GED or a copy of their high school diploma if available. Students that have attended college other than HCC need to bring their official college transcripts. Students new to Houston Community College are required to take the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Assessment test. The TSI test will determine their college readiness in reading, writing and math.
Prerequisites for the MLT Program are English 1301 Freshman Composition, MATH 1314 College Algebra, and Introduction to Health Professions HPRS 1201; HPRS 1201 that must be passed with a B or better. A graduate using the 2-year degree could further their education by obtaining a 4-year Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science degree in as little as 18 months and then work as a MLS in the same areas already mentioned. Employment opportunities are excellent in the Houston area, Gulf Coast areas, and across the United States and some employers are offering sign-on bonuses.
