How To Get Involved
Naturally your academic and professional pursuits should be your top priority while in college. However, while pursuing your educational and career goals consider further enriching your college experience by getting involved in student activities.
What does it mean to get involved?
This may mean more than you think, and the answer is as unique as the individual! There are a wide range of activities to choose from at HCC-Coleman College including:
- Join a student organization or start your own!
- Think about being a student leader
- Run to be an officer position in a student org. or ICC representative
- professional development opportunities
- cultural events
- college and HCC district-wide activities
- volunteerism and service learning
- entertainment…and much more!
Why should I get involved on campus?
When you get involved in student activities, you have the opportunity to:
- develop leadership skills
- make new friends
- become connected to Coleman College & HCC (feeling a sense of "place")
- make a difference on and off campus
- network
- gain a sense of achievement
- build your resume
- enjoy a variety of experiences
- impress universities you want to transfer to
- have fun!
How do I get involved?
You can begin by asking yourself the following questions:
- What are my current areas of interest?
- What is important to me?
- Where can I best contribute my skills and talents?
- What am I looking to gain from this experience?
- What activity best fits your schedule and availability?
How much is enough?
Only YOU can answer this question. Here are a few helpful things to remember:
- Your first priority is your academic commitments (classes, clinical hours, and assignments).
- You should be having fun!
- You should be learning!
- Don't commit unless you're sure you have the time to follow through.
- Take your time. Be choosy. Try to imagine how your activities will fit into your schedule and your life.
- Be realistic about what you can balance in your life.
